Collapse!

My latest audiotogo CD is "Collapse!" by Jared Diamond. My mom bought me his previous book, "Guns, Germs, and Steel" when I was in grad school and I really enjoyed it. The manner he presents the information allows the reader to see the relevance to today's world. He not so subtly compares other failed societies mistakes to ones we may be committing right now.

The initial assumption that Easter Island had no trees is ominous. How did they ever cut down...ALL THE TREES...in order to make statues? And they I look at the McMansions around me...

I want to say that Collapse was a much easier read, but since I didn't actually read it ----it's an audio book - I'm not sure that's a reliable opinion.

Tomorrow I start another John Grisham, "The Street Lawyer".

That sounds interesting, in a way that might give me nightmares if I read it. I like to think about how, years from now, when history is looking unkindly on this era, I can say, "yeah, but I disagreed with it!" but then I realize that my kids will respond, "really?! what did you do?" and I'll say, "uh...hey, isn't that the ice cream truck?" So maybe I shouldn't read this book.

You still need to read The Remains of the Day. for real, I really think you'd like it.
