After much ado, we're in full on cloth diapers now. We settled on prefolds for a few reasons. 1) They are the least expensive. 2) They have been used successfully for decades. (I don't think I can say centuries because I'm not sure when they replaced flats). And 3) It allows for me to purchase a wider variety of cute diaper covers than any other diaper solution.
Jerry wears a disposable diaper at night because that has always worked for us. He generally sleeps through the night and hasn't had night time blow outs or leaks a month. I'm not going to mess with that. That time is way too important. (For my sanity and his health).
I wash the diapers and cloth wipes about every other day. Sometimes it's a load in the morning and the next day a load in the evening. When I wash them in the morning, I line dry them. This bleaches out any stains and helps offset the additional laundry costs (electricity) from using cloth diapers. I sewed some wipes together as well. They seem to be holding up well so far.
In the heat down here, Gerald is often just sporting his diaper as his outfit for the day. When we go out, he is generally in a romper or overalls. The onesies don't fit as well over the cloth diapers but we still wear the ones we have. I think we just need to upsize a bit sooner.
We're traveling a bit in the middle of summer (5 days in NY, followed by 10 days in Chicago). I'm certain we'll do disposable diapers in Chicago. I'd need to pack another suitcase to fit his diapers in our luggage. But I think we'll do cloth in NY since we're driving there and they will easily fit in the car.
So far our stash is:
12 Chinese Prefolds
6 Indian Prefolds
6 gDiaper inserts
2 Bummis wraps
2 Thirsties Duo wraps
1 Kissaluvs wrap
1 Fuzzi Bunz Perfect Sized Pocket Diaper (bought 2nd hand)
18 homemade diaper wipes
And really, aside from sizing a few of the items up as he grows, we have more than enough. But there are such CUTE diaper covers out there....I see our stash growing. I just have to make sure I stay far on the side of cloth diapers being an economical solution.
